Argentina legend Diego Maradona was named manager of Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata – the very first training job in his homeland.
The 58-year-old, Argentina’s 1986 World Cup-winning captain, takes control until the season’s close.
Gimnasia – famous El Lobo, which means’the Wolf’ – are at underside of the Primera Division.
“Star of planet football Diego Maradona has now signed his name and can be the new trainer of Gimnasia,” the club said.
Maradona, who shared the Player of the 20th Century award of Fifa with Pele that is great that is Brazilian, takes on a team that have obtained a single point from their five matches.
He left his managerial function of Mexico division ensemble Dorados de Sinaloa at June, after failing to secure promotion citing issues with his health.
“Finally it is now official,” Maradona wrote on Instagram. “I am quite delighted to be the new coach of Gimnasia.
“I wish to thank the president Gabriel Pellegrino with this chance and say to all the fans that we are going to work with our hearts and souls for El Lobo.”
Maradona role is his golf management job; he was also in charge of the national team for two years in 2008, taking them to the 2010 World Cup quarter-finals in South Africa.
