This summer manchester City manager Pep Guardiola was told to restrict his spending – and it could leave him.
City are to discover the entire extent of the accident Aymeric Laporte sustained in Saturday’s 4-0 win against Brighton.
But Guardiola says”it doesn’t look great” and knows any absence will leave him just two mature centre-backs.
This summer skipper Vincent Kompany abandoned and was not replaced.
That left John Stones and Laporte, Nicolas Otamendi as the champions’ only recognised defenders.
City were keen on Harry Maguire however weren’t prepared to match the 80m Manchester United compensated Leicester for the England man.
“The team told me there’s a limit and we cannot go for it right now,” said Guardiola.
The Spaniard spent a club album #62.8m midfielder Rodri, and an extra #60m on Portugal full-back Joao Cancelo, who is yet to make his debut. City recouped throughout Fabian Delph, Danilo and Douglas Luiz’s sales about # 60m.
“We can’t manage it like other teams can afford it,” additional Guardiola.
“I never complained about that. We paid a great deal of money for a great deal of players, that is why we have a squad that was deep with a lot of quality. But you need a limitation. Maybe later on, but right now we cannot do it.”
Guardiola anticipates Stones to return following a two-game absence for the trip to Norwich on 14 but after this season, with all the Champions League campaign starting after that, also EFL Cup responsibilities, the City boss may need to find creative in defence.
That may mean midfielder Fernandinho or Kyle Walker shifting from the right-back place before.
“It’s exactly what it really is,” explained Guardiola. “We are in the summer and the men will need to step ahead.
“In case Kyle Walker has to perform a central defender, he’ll act as a central refuge. We must find solutions.”
