Unlike the Kentucky Derby, where there is a buzz around the event no matter what the circumstances are, that the enthusiasm for the Belmont depends on the results of the first two races. When there is not a horse which has won the first two legs at Churchill Downs and Pimlico, the air simply is not the same at Belmont Park. The last two horses to come in with a opportunity to win the Triple Crown have delivered the goods with Justify this past year and American Pharoah at 2015. After American Pharoah won, he had been the first two accomplish the feat since Affirmed in 1978. It snapped a streak of 13 straight times the winner of the Derby and Preakness failed to win at the final leg.
This year that buzz won’t be there, as Kentucky Derby winner, Country House, didn’t even race in the Preakness Stakes.
