Why black coaches can help nurture the next generation of young talent

Diversity in soccer is not an equality problem, but it’s all about maximising the talent available. Adam Bate talks to black coaches and administrators at home and overseas to discover the level of the issue and the benefits that will be felt if it could be addressed…

“In my profession, I’d role models and daddy figures, anything you would like to call themwho knew me and Dane Farrell was one of them. It is no coincidence he was black. There was a connection there. I could discuss issues better than with anybody else because he knew where I was coming from.”
Robinson was helped by farrell’s presence but he was a rarity. Today, Darren Moore is one of the few directors working in English soccer. He senses that he is responded to by black players . “You might not even notice it since it may not be outwardly obvious,” he tells Sky Sports. “But it is only a natural reaction.”
Setting the substance cost of not needing this bond is more tricky to check, although few would dispute that it might be advantageous for young gamers with their mentor.
